01/52 //Bloom

After a lot of hesitance, I decided to start another 52 Weeks project. My last one ended in 2013, abruptly after much struggling to keep it afloat. Last year was the year of non-existent personal, creative work, and inspiration was a constant battle.
Conceptual work has never been my greatest strength, but it was what drew me to photography in the first place. I let my fear and doubt in myself keep me from pursuing it for fun, which I realize now was kind of ridiculous. This is my year of breaking down walls that I allowed others to set, and realize that I can do whatever I want. It seems like such a simple concept, but it seemed unrealistic last year. I felt my work getting stale, my inquiries changing to a style I wanted no part of, and couldn't explain why even editing became a forced process I had to repeat twice, sometimes three times, when the whole process used to flow much more naturally. I thought it may be because I was growing, but I was actually taking steps backwards.
Taking and editing these self portraits felt natural. ( As natural as a self portrait can feel.) I want to really push myself in this project, even in it means producing some questionable work or weirding people out in the process. (Pretty sure everyone knows I'm weird by now.)
You can follow this project on my Facebook page and my Flickr.
You can also see a simple behind the scenes here.
Are you starting any personal projects this year in photography, art, reading, etc.? I'd love to read about it!
